A scarf is brilliant piece of clothing worn around the neck, head, or waist to keep warm or cool. It is also used to cover the head and neck for religious purposes. Historically, it is believed that it is the Romans first used scarves to wipe their faces and neck during the summer. Scarves are called sudarium in Latin which means sweat cloth. Originally, it was the men who wore scarves. But now, scarves are also commonly worn by women. Since the 19th century, scarves have become a staple as a fashion statement for both men and women.

Scarf knitting has also become a source of trade in some countries. Scarves, which are knitted by the hand, are truly appreciated and are a popular gift item. Some of the high quality fashion designer brands of printed scarves are Hermes, Dior, Chanel and Prada. Scarves are sometimes also worn with school uniforms and some athletes or sports lovers, to identify their teams. There are many kinds of scarves; there are plain and printed scarves and there are hand-knitted. Some scarves are also made of cotton, polyester, rayon, wool and satin. Cashmere and pashmina silk scarves are commonly worn at special and formal events. Scarves are typically used for their functional uses including climatic conditions and the exposure of the environment. Scarves are very essential during winter as they are used to keep people warm. During the warm seasons, people wear head scarves and bandanas to protect their heads from the scorching heat of the sun. If one’s hair becomes dry from sun exposure, a head scarf really helps you avoid getting spit ends and dry, frizzy hair. Scarves can also be worn as a skirt or around a skirt. They can also be worn on the waist as a belt to your jeans or pareo. A very small scarf can be worn to tie your hair. You can use it as an accent to your ponytail. These days scarves are prominent to men and women to signify a high taste of style and fashion.
